Wanted: Rack and Pinion Inverted Flare Fitting
« on: Jan 19, 2021, 06:00:44 pm »
I recently acquired a 1985 Celica GTS that needs a lot of work, including an engine rebuild. I rebuilt the rack and pinion because it was leaking badly through the input shaft seal. Changing the power steering fluid that was in the system to the recommended ATF did not help. Well I lost one of the inverted flare fittings. I need the smaller one that goes between one of the hard lines and the rack and pinion, not the larger one that goes between the lines coming from the power steering pump/fluid reservoir and the rack and pinion. I was wondering if someone has one they can sell me. I haven’t been able to find anyone that sells them online. If not, can you confirm if this fitting can be found on other Toyotas of that year (Camrys, etc). Did all camrys come with power steering if the Camry has this fitting? Worst case I can pick one up from the junk yard.

Not really sure what you're looking for - a picture would probably go a long way in clarifying.  If you mean one of the hard lines which go from the control valve to the tube on the rack, I would suggest hitting up a junkyard with some measurements and a pic on your phone to compare parts

Here are examples of these types of fittings from Summit. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/brg-925122

There is an 85 Camry at my local junkyard. I think it should have some if it has power steering. I will probably check there if I can’t find one.

junkyard would probably be your best bet.  I would be surprised if there are more than 2 or 3 sizes across the different Toyota models

I went to the junkyard and pulled the fittings from the 1985 Camry. They were exactly the same sizes as the ones from my 1985 Celica GTS, just like I thought. I pulled the smaller ones that are located between the hardlines and the rack and the larger ones that are located between the feed/return lines that go between the lines and the rack. The easiest way to remove them is from the engine bay on the driver's side using some open end hand wrenches. It is a tight fit to remove the fittings from the hard lines but it didn't take too long.
