Restoring '85+ 22re valve cover
« on: Feb 08, 2022, 01:13:02 am »
Heya everyone. not really looking for help, just wanting to show a project im up to while diff rebuild is underway. Decided to buy a 91 4runner valve cover to polish and restore. turns out theres a slight difference in the outer castings, which incorporated an extra threaded bolt hole on the front left. so i swapped over the covers and am slowly grinding the nasty cast molding for the celica cover, and shaving the edges down too. once done, gonna treat the pvc baffle inside since a LOT of gunk blasted out during chemical clean. gonna be going with a nice deep burgundy then polished top section, finished with some flake clear coat from a japanese bike paint style called "kierin" paint. its really sparkly and am excited to do it tbh, most especially shaving off the 3+mm of casting garbage off the outer edges near the gaskets.
I understand that this may need to go in engine section but this is more of a mod, than a performance thing, for purely cosmetic purposes.

also, hope everyone had a good new years and stay safe everyone.

I did a similar thing when I was putting mine together; sanded the casting edges, polished the top, poured black enamel paint in the middle, and wrinkle blacked the outside. I also can't recommend the LCE billet cap enough, it looks so nice on a fresh valve cover.

Ps, I personally use the attachments built into the site, but they probably aren't the easiest to get used to bc of the size restriction. Most people use hosting sites

Finally got a somewhat adequate soaking solution to remove the carbon and oils out of the inside as well as remove oils off the outer surface so i should be ready to sand on the top portion and get the cover ready for paint. Very excited for this little project tbh
