1982 Supra Digital Dash install in 1985 Celica gts
« on: Feb 13, 2022, 06:17:30 am »
Hi everyone, I know many say its dumb to try, a pain to do, lower and laggy speedo, oil dummy lights and all of the sorts but I thought what the heck I just want my Celica to look a bit more cool, and ill be adding the essential gauges later. I thought I'd try it while my Celica is down (rebuilding engine so I can't test full cluster until engine is back in) and to help any others that would like to take this trip too. Keep in mind this is being done with a stock analog wiring harness besides switching the oil and fuel senders as required. I'll try my best to include photos, links to where I got things and ideas from so again if anyone would like to try they can go right ahead (Also I am not sure this will work with the later clusters or in earlier Celicas or vice versa, but if you'd like to try, be my guest). If anyone would like to help with any info or input that would be much appreciated! :)

So far what's been done:

-Speedo Turns on and works
-Tacho Turns on and I'm pretty sure works (all lights work up to redline)
-Fuel gauge turns on (doesn't read fuel level yet)
-Low fuel level light turns on
-Temp gauge turns on and I'm almost sure works
-E Brake light turns on
-High beams and turn signal work
-Seatbelt light turn on for a bit and turns off after courtesy door alarm turns off (as same in the analog)
-Rear lights turn on and can be dimmed

What needs to be done:

-Get oil pressure dummy light to turn on (does but when door courtesy is wired up to it )
-Get charge dummy light to turn on
-Get high temp signal to turn on
-Get door courtesy light to turn on
-Get speed and fuel scale changes to work
-Get fuel sender to work properly (either with proper xAxx,ae86,MXxx digital fuel sending unit or Fuel Link Gauge interface Module)
-Get tacho to read correctly (with Dakota Digital SGI-100BT UNIVERSAL SIGNAL INTERFACE UNIT) (if you are using one from a celica GTS, don't quote me but you probably don't have to do this step)

P.S: I will probably not be trying to get the trip computer or cruise control to work since I will not be using them any time soon, nor do I think I will ever find them, and at that a reasonable price (RIP Digital clock though :crying:)

P.P.S: I'll be trying my best to update this as soon as I get time to work on it and to makes posts

Edit: Sorry for any side ways and upside down photos

ive always wanted to get the boomerang digital tach tbh, i just love how purely 80's it is but am unsure how easy it is, or rare/pricy they are. good luck, you look to be making excellent progress

Wow, great progress so far! That would be so awesome if you could provide a detailed report on what exactly you changed so others can follow suit!

I have a 1982 Supra with the digital dash and Fuel & Temp gauges stopped working. I was wondering if I can swap it out for an analog dash. Do I need to modify or replace the harness? Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Sadly its not a direct swap, and defintely would need to replace sensors, plugs and possibly parts of the body harness. I would suggest a replacement digi dash:

ok well guys it has actually been done and for the most part successfully. I take my words back on the trip computer, I went on a run to the junkyard in hopes to get the fuel send but it was gone by the time I got there, but I was able to come home with the trip computer and harness. I was able to get the thing to turn on but am lost on where to wire the rest in order to get it to work properly with the mpg and so the clock doesn't reset after a few minutes of turning off the car. but so far as in an update, all lights work, oil pressure, high temp, temp gauge, battery and low fuel warning, tachometer. The speedo scale and fuel change work, and as of now I have the volt meter wired up to the fuel level gauge. once I get the fuel level to properly work ill probably install a switch so that it flips between voltage and fuel level so I wont need an extra voltmeter gauge (id say the 12v mark is about when it marks 2 over the half tank line). Another thing that I have found is that the temp sender does not have to be switched, should work with original 22re temp sender.

If anyone here has a fuel sender they're willing to part with for a reasonable price and or knows where i can get one that's not imported that would be much of a help.

soon ill have to take it out in order to fix my odometer so ill take a few photos and explain further how it is wired up and so hopefully anyone who goes down this path has it more smoothly than the hours I spent with trial and error and fuses.
