82 GT(S?) Carb issues
« on: Apr 07, 2022, 01:51:59 am »
Howdy y'all. I usually post on the Celica-supra forums but have recently acquired a 1982 Celica GT (with fender flares/supra interior/sport trim?) and am having an issue where the car struggles under load, and I've noticed the second butterfly valve on the carb which i believe is vacuum operated does not open at all. Just a bunch of drivability issues. Pics to come, input is appreciated thank you!

EDIT: I am in CALIFORNIA  and need some smog legal suggestions as far as possible replacements or fixes thanks

i would get in contact with someone local who specializes in carburetor rebuilds. i had this same exact issue with dads 82 carby. the secondary bf valve was jammed closed and upon rebuild, the plate was bent and warped. you can also go with a weber 32/36 for a boost in power. i see the celi and 4runner people doing this regularly. good on ya for saving that dragon btw

Thanks for the reply. I would do the weber however I am in the great state of California and have to bend the knee to smog shenanigans, which is ultimately why I made this thread

exact reason i even bothered doing the rebuild. dang smog stuff is especially frustrating on a carbed car so i feel for ya.
Which part of cali btw? we have two classic celica groups in the northern cali area, Bay Area Classic Celica run by twotone, and Greater Sacramento Classic Celica, the latter im local to

oooh, awesome. Had no idea this existed. Should solve my engine troubles for sure.
What's different about it that makes it emissions legal?

As someone who lives in the state that's probably as far as you can get from California...I have no idea.

it likely has something to do with electric choke, different jets, or generally being similar to what oem emissions show id guess. i was planning to get that carb but it was out of my price range

California Air Resources Board (CARB) website (https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/amquery.php) lists the Weber 32/36 as permitted for carbureted Celicas 1975-1983, thank the manufacturer for submitting it for testing and approval by CARB:
Quote
EO: D-133-2   View PDF
EO Date: 1985-03-11
Manufacturer Name: Redline, Inc.
Device: Weber
Device Type: Carburetor / Carburetor Modification
Part_Number:   Model_Specification:   Modification_Allowed:   Remarks:
32/36 DGAV 33B1    1975-1977 Toyota Celica, Corona and 2WD & 4 WD P/U (Kit K8746) 1978-1980 Toyota Celica, Corona and 2WD & 4 WD P/U (Kit K8747)
32/36 DGEV 33B1    1981-1983 Toyota Celica, 1981-1984 Toyota 2 & 4 WD P/U (Kit K8749)
Note that it's the 32/36 DGEV (not DGAV) listed for your 1982 Celica.  Online search for the kit ("Weber kit K8749") gives some hits right away, and I think a bit cheaper than LC.  And all your other smog-related stuff will still have to be there too of course (cat converter? EGR?).

The 4x4 folks seem to think that there's very little difference between a Weber and a stock Toyota/Aisin carb, there's just the difference when you replace an old broken-down carb with a brand new one.

Right then, I've installed the new 32/36, and have gotten the car running nicely.
In the process, I drained the fuel tank and found ALGAE. AND went through four fuel filters. Unfortunately, I now have a running 22r that will not pass smog due to high emissions. Curious.

What's running high on emissions? Emissions has a lot of dependencies on different things operating correctly. Could also be that your cat is old and tired.
