22re freshening up
« on: Apr 22, 2022, 05:13:42 am »
decided to look into replacement vacuum lines to sort out this nagging idle surge ive had since purchase. found three lines which were cracked past the fittings, one being visibly cracked to where a large volume could leak in. also noticed the fitting on the intake side being chock full of gunk that had the thing clogged, and also leading into the manifold. using carb cleane, cleaned it out and scooped the gunk out from what i could manage. the line led to the PS pump via ACV. on startup the thing spat blue smoke for a hot second before clearing up, i presume the carb cleaner and gunk i sprayed into it got combusted but otherwise, car is way more responsive, idles correctly, and generally less grumpy while pulling from stops. next thing i plan is to either get a spare intake manifold to have cleaned, or do it to my own manifold. overall pleased with how it looks too, just the LCE silicone hose DIY kit in black. highly recommend it to be done as a cheap, but quality of life thing.

Will likely use this thread to update on any further mods or maintanence things i do to the engine. i plan to replace the oil pan next, as its totally crumpled on the front sump section. (or hammer it out as they are reasonably scarce from what ive learned)

Pulled the exhaust manifold to learn i had two studs stripped out on the head side, which is what has been causing my engine bay to be so blasted hot, and my exhaust to sound like crap. did a helicoil repair on the head and just used some random m10x1.25 threaded bolts for now until i get a new custom header. engine sounds healthier and quieter, and im not cooking my brake master on those long cruises ive been taking.

I also finished the Valve cover restoration, my dad did a deep mirror polish to it and after seeing it, was satisfied with keeping it raw aluminum around the base.

Next plan to replace the starter solenoid as the starter doesnt always want to engage, which forces me to rock the car a couple times in gear to turn the engine position.
Also plan to pull injectors and send them off to Jim at 22rePerformance so i can cross that off the list, as the car seems to have an inconsistent backfire or hiccup. chased everything else down so that seems like all i can do thats left.

Update! I learned of how to fine tune the IACV and will be attempting this soon when i pull my intake plenum and runners out to do a deep thorough carbon and gunk removal. ill also be sending injectors out for servicing soon, and then pulling my disfigured and mangled oil pan to caveman it back into shape since i cant source a nice pan. oh and then replace my starter as i have to rock the car around in gear to rotate the engine after its been sitting for a few hours to get the starter to engage. Very fun, ive finally noticed my mpg start to creep up as ive been fixing things around it.
