Engine dies at 190 coolant temp
« on: Jul 23, 2022, 11:25:15 pm »
Hey guys,

I've been fighting fuel issues with my celica for quite a while now and after replacing the fuel pump, filter, regulator, injectors, and installing a megasquirt 2, my car dies when it warms up to 190 degrees. It all started with a rusty gas tank clogging my fuel filter. I ended up cleaning the fuel tank, resealing it, and adding a 100 micron prefilter to be safe. Still had issues and assumed it was clogged injectors. Figured i would just install the megasquirt and new injectors then because i had then for going turbo. Ended up fighting ignition issues with the megasquirt only to fix them and hear I am with an engine that still doesn't run right  :heh:

Afr's lean out and it quickly dies every time it warms up. Do you guys have any idea what it could be? If it's an ignition problem, I assume the afr could lean out because the lack of spark leads to none of oxygen being burned?

Long story short. Please help me. I'm dumb and just want to drive my car again  :)

have you flushed your lines? we had a similar issue where we got clogged injectors, then drained the tank (and finding black garbage, but not rust), then ran it again with clean injectors. they clogged almost immediately, and flow through the lines was very restricted. have you tested fuel pressure?

I made the mistake of not flushing the lines when I cleaned the tank and ended up immediately clogging a new fuel filter. That's when I drained the tank again and added the pressure filter. Fuel pressure is staying steady via the gauge on the fuel reg.

Have you recorded log files of the car running and then dying at temp? I can take a look and see if anything pops out; I've tuned megasquirt 1 and megasquirt 2 on a few different setups so might be able to find something.

How is your ignition system set up?

Does the car run fine until you reach 190 and then it dies like a light switch?

Or does the car go more and more lean until it dies when the coolant temp reaches 190?

You can email your log and tune files to teranfirbt@hotmail.com.

I have emailed you some logs of the car idling until it dies as well as the current tune.

Ignition Input:  Stock Dizzy vr sensor with vacuum/mechanical advances welded in place (1984 engine)
Ignition Output:  Ground for the stock ignition coil

Car idles with a random misfire until it warms up to approximately 190 then leans out for 10s-30s and dies.

Thanks for the help!
