Whining noise from 5th gear

ive always had this quirk with my trans where 5th has been a very vocal gear that likes to whir and whine while engaged. lately ive noticed 2nd, and 3rd are showing signs of this too. Wondering if this is the car hinting for me of an impending rebuild. Note that the whine isnt loud persay, but its definitely there when compared to any other gear, and is also more noticeable when coasting in gear. I highly doubt its gonna detonate like a subaru gearbox, but its something i thought id ask others about. gear oil looks clean enough when last checked. not clear but a light yellow. Oh and it likes to fight going into 1st a lot.

Are you sure this is the transmission? I have this symptom and I know for a fact my pinion bearings are worn out.

It's way louder on decel than anything.

did a fresh diff rebuild a few months back with new bearings and solid pinion spacer. so unless i goofed that up, i dont think itd be the pinion bearings. and its directly beneath my hand while reaching to shift. might record it sometime while on highway

How many miles on it? I have never had an issue with ging into first. I sons 87 supra has some issues going into second but it has 220 k or more on it.
How sloppy is your shifter? when you checked your fluid did you have any metal on it?

shes at 216k right now for the chassis. engine i am unsure of as when purchased, leading me to maybe assume trans as well is different. it had signs of being from another celica of the same year since the VC and intake plenum had junkyard markings. shifters extremely rigid with a short throw, and replaced bushings and pivot sleeve from BillyM. I understand the short throw may be an issue with 1st gear, however, my original one was pretty mangled.

No metal or glitter from what i had seen when i checked fluids.

If my Tercel is any indication, whirring or whining in gear means impending doom. I had an issue with my Celica where I chipped a tooth on 5th gear and it made a whining noise and the car had a slight vibration in gear.

if that indication is correct, then i think ill start keeping an eye out for the early 90s w58s out of the MK4 supras. I was told by my local drift shop that theyre the most bulletproof w5x gearboxes due to iron reinforcement in the center. Just needs a shifter plate swap to our style.
