Car repair gone sideways
« on: Sep 18, 2022, 08:35:20 pm »
Working on my other car (Grand Prix) - the metal rear brake lines decided to get a pinhole leak. Specifically, the one that runs over the trailing arm to the right rear.

So I ordered the longest nicopp line I could - six feet.

It's 6-7" too short. Bah.  :(

So I had to order a 25' coil of it but it's over two weeks away.

Another interesting thing I discovered was a round flare. Never seen one before, I've only had cars that had double flares on them (or they look inverted.) So I had to buy a new tool.  :heh:

So, I decided to be productive and change the other rear line. The main lines running to the front of the car actually look fine with no rust, but from the union just ahead of the gas tank rearward both look pretty bad. So now that the easy line has been changed, I have to wait until the longer line gets here.

While under there, I found the fuel filter. Figured I'll change that but need to wait for a new one. Now I just have to figure out why my parking brake doesn't work properly. I think the cables have stretched, but who knows.

I hate it when something unexpected happens. Now I have to wait for over two weeks until everything gets here. :(

Ah, bubble flares are so much fun. Should have checked with parts stores, my local Advance Auto keeps rolls of nickel-copper brake line in stock. That might just be a Maine/Northeast thing though.

I don't know if it's a supply issue here, but I went to four stores and only one had a 6' length they could get.

One store had a 25' roll they could order but it was almost $200 and over a week away anyway - Amazon had a roll made by NiCopp for less than half of that.

It's times like these when I'm glad I have four vehicles, I just drive a different one for a couple weeks.  :heh: At least gas has started to come down here. It's still $1.90/litre [or $7.18 a gallon] (down from $2.45/litre [or $9.26/gallon]). Those are Canadian prices. Driving my truck still hurts but not as bad.
