How goes it? From Vegas
« on: Oct 26, 2022, 12:01:18 pm »
Hey, just became the proud owner of an RA64. 260K miles, spot rust as it's from Oregon, but nothing major that I can find so far. Would appreciate advice on what problem spots to check. Aiming to make it my daily. In need of a new clutch slave cylinder, suspension, and some general cosmetic work. Runs great. Got it because I wanted to own an AE86, found this and fell way for harder for the shape and color. Not upset to hear how reliable the 22RE is compared to the 86's motor either, lol.

Only owner number 3, and hoping to fully restore it. Need help with changing the aforementioned suspension, and finding interior parts (prev. Owner got rid of the OEM seats, and lots of little spots are either damaged or missing), so direction for the right threads to read in regards to that would be great. Excited to learn from you all.

what a beauty! Rockauto can be your friend for these cars, most of the oem suspension bits i did at home with their stuff. for seats? I greatly suggest seats out of the MA60 supras, theyre super comfy and fit the car perfectly! I also agree on the preferernce for it over an ae86, the rear just looks a lot more aggressive, not to mention various shared parts like rear axles being the same, and such. I'd say, first things to do are to do a total fluids change just to start off fresh (try running stuff with zinc content as they are supposedly able to run a lot nicer with that stuff, ie Shell Rotella T4 Diesel Oils) and then get yourself a feeler gauge and fine tine the rocker arms, those are a common service item on the 22re engines. you could then test TPS signals to get a good idle, then i think youre all set!
Maybe buy a shifter bushing kit since ours are notoriously worn most of the time.

Hey thanks for the compliment and advice! I'm glad I was on the right track with the full fluid swap. Yeah the rear of the Celicas before the supra split is kinda unmatched for me, definitely at least in terms of Toyota. The two-tone between the liftback trunk and the back itself drives me wild. Sometimes I just stand in my garage and stare at it. Relieved to hear rock auto will make life a lot easier. Will add everything you said to the list as I push this thing to be daily ready again.

Hey welcome to the forum! I would suggest checking the rear quarter panel by the exhaust and checking the rocker panels. My car is up in Connecticut since 2011 (it was from North Carolina) and I bought it in 2018 and I have noticed those two spots build rust, along with the bottom of the doors.
These photos are from January this year so don't mind the snow!

Sorry to get back to you so late. Thanks for the advice! Will check these out for certain. Checked the doors when I got it, but will check the other spots when I work on it later this week.

Hello and welcome! That, as well as the bottom of the rear hatch glass, are very rust-prone areas of our cars. Luckily your hatch looks mint!

No rust in this spot either! Thanks for the help; Surprised she's in such good shape to be from a rainy state like Oregon. She did spring a high oil leak though that's giving me a headache. Wanna do a full reseal, but this will be my first engine pull. Hoping things should be a little easier than newer cars because of how few electronics there are, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous. Like her too much to let her go tho.

Just take lots of pictures as you take parts off. Bag stuff and lable bags. It will make things easier to remember when puting it all back together. If the car doesnt run good you should consider at least rebiulding the head.
