Open Element Air Filter
« on: Sep 09, 2003, 09:05:03 pm »
I have seen a few pics and I just put mine on...

What is the resevoir underneath the AFM, the one the intake duct leads to?  Is that supposed to be removed?

And do I need a bracket?  Only thing holding it in place is the hose from throttle body > AFM  :P  Can I see some pics of your guys' set-up...Where would be a good place to fasten a bracket on the AFM?

Thanks

I think I got screwed on my panda paint job...

i took EVERYTNG out that had to do with the old filter box. I shortend the rubber intake hose from the AFm to the TB and that allows the filter to either "float" without any brackets... although i use a few zip-ties to secure it to the front radiator cross-member.

Since im on a major budget, would it be meaningful to put in a stock replacement K&N filter and then punch some big holes in the air can? you can find stock replacement filters online for about 35 bucks, with free shipping if you find the right place.

Edit: By major, i meant majorly small ^_^

Lol, its worth a try...Is it possible to hurt a filter that wasn't made to be over exposed?

I'm gonna give my take on the open air filter...

My car starts up a whole lot easier
Much improved throttle response
And a nice deep tone around 2500 and a rumble around 3000 and up.

All in all, I think it was well worth the money...took me about 45 min to put it in <_<

Now all i need to do is to make a bracket, but I'm not sure how i wanna mount it.

Oh yeah...If you are short on money, you can try the thermos lid idea and just buy the filtercharger,  I should have taken a picture of the adapter Toysport gave me...pretty good quality.

Well, ive seen guys with stock filters that have a cap... so i dont think having it this way would hurt it, and besides, K&N uses the same materials in all their filters, and since most are designed to be open air, ya just gotta figure it will be fine...

Actually, ive heard the open element filters improve smog ratings? but even if it changes it a bit, it doesnt really matter... last time i did the test it came out with all the scores at least half the requirements, some as low as 1/4...
