Front Side Marker Conversion
« on: May 07, 2006, 10:59:02 pm »
I'm not sure if many of you guys have already done this, I did this on my last celica and I just did it on my new one today since it's easier to find red side markers than the stock yellow ones. And the red ones are the same ones found on the Camrys, Corollas, and back of the Celica coupes. So I thought if anyone wanted to know I'd just write this up, even if no one here is really interested someone outside of the forums might search for it. So here is my min tutorial to doing the swap properly.

The stock one

if you use the same side marker as the ones found on the rear fenders of the Celica coupes you have to use a different hook up. Since the stock front ones wont allow clearance for the red side markers (I think there might be one that is found on pre 83 toyotas, but haven't checked)

Stock side marker light bulb housing.

So I cut up a couple bulb housings that would fit the new side makers (might be able to transfer the smae housing found on the rear celica coupe side markers, but I didn't really have access to many coupes) These came from mainly Camrys. I I attatched the celicas cable to the new ones I pulled so it would be more convienent if I needed to chang ethings.

Modified adaptor

After that it should be a pretty quick plug'n play. Even though the side marker says TOP at the top of the side marker you have to flip it upside down to make it fit in the hole. So if it seems like it doesn't fit just flip it and see if that works.

Red Side marker

And then screw it back on :D

the red side marker is a little larger than the stock yellow one, but I like the way red looks better  :P

oh yea, since i don't really like searching for these yellow side markers if I break one since red ones are so much easier to find. If someone wants my yellow one to replace their broken one or just needs it I can ship it to you guys. It's in perfect condition, no cracks or scratches.

While it's a good mod, it might be illegal in your state.. I know that Oregon requires your front side marker lights to be white or amber... Not sure how much crap you'd get for it, but it's something to keep in mind.

How did you get the new bulb housing to attach to the old surrounding part that screws into the car? Is it just held in due to the a tight fit on the hole you cut or did you glue it.?

Okay I see the screws kinda of sandwhich it all together.

But you still had to cut up the old couple bulb housings to fit the new light housing correct? So kinda of bolt-on with slight modification.

yea, basically you take the bulb and wires from the side markers you are taking to splice them on to the other one. I just meant that after splicing it just screws on, it's a direct fit for that part.

I know where I am anything other than red, amber, or clear is illegal. All them ricers with the ground lighting kits and led's on their wipers are just an excuse for the cops here to pull you over. :P

yea here, cops will give you a fix-it ticket for under glow kits, or colored lights of not the norm, like green or blue. There are more techincal things they get get us for, but they seem not to bother us unless your car is annoying, lol. Like a fart can ricer that makes the car alarms go off cuz it's just freakin loud, or ugly dark tints on the driver/front pass windows, lol.

Yea I still have the yellow one. I only have 1 though (partly why I did the red conversion) so if you want I can ship it to you. I'll find out how much it cost to ship and you can send a check or something. Also it's the one for the right side (passenger side). And you can get the red side markers off of other toyotas around the same year.

Oh yea, do you want just the yellow cover or do you need the whole harness? Just so I know how big of a box I need to send it in if you are interested.
