Rear Differential
« on: Sep 14, 2003, 06:11:43 am »
ok so the rear end diferential went out on my 83 gts it's making weird noises like i got a playing card rubing on moving parts but it's inside somewhere. it has oil in it, but i am going ot have to get some new gears for it i am sure. my question however is would the gears in the differential from an 82 gt fit in there? i would not think so since mine has irs and the gt doesnt but if anyone knows for sure that would let me have a much cheaper fix.

If you wanted you could swap in a supra diff.

You can swap any celica or supra diff from 1982-1985. although since i dont know a GTS i dont know if the dif is different between the GTS and GT. i know the GTS is IRS... but the actual internal differential should be the exact same.

If they both 6.7" differential it might work.
The Supre differential will only fit a GT-S that has the same size Differential.
The early Celica Gt-S 82-84 used a 6.7" vs the larger 7.5" on the Supras and 85 GT-S.
I had  both a 84GT-S 6.7" and a 85 GT-S 7.5" in order to have the 7.5" differnetial with the better gearing in the 84 I would have to switch out the whole rear IRS, not only the are the differnetials different the punkins are differnet to plus they bolt up differently.  Trust me I have trie swaping out the punkins it would not work, you would be back to welding and cutting again a IRS swap in much easier.

Is it possible to swap in a GT-S or Supra rear end into a GT?
