Plug And Play Megasquirt - Success.
« on: Oct 29, 2006, 01:33:55 am »
I've finally (after well over 80 hours) succesfully come up with a plug and play solution for megasquirt and the 22re.

The system is + 1 wire (used to ground 02 sensor heat)  and
+1 connector (a vacuum hose).

Literally it swaps in within 30 seconds if the kick panel is out.

Cost is currently $350 - I refer to DIY autotune.  I'm not reselling for them, I'm simply passing on their successful implementation of this system.  I'm working on an assembly source that will allow me to sell these for $300, but to date, I've spent a *ton* of time on the issue and the boards are have not been built to my satisfaction level.  As such, I'm no selling them right now.

The harness itself, I sell for $125.
I can do harness for the 22RTE also for a similar cost.

Sorry, this really shouldn't be a "forsale" post in this forum - it's a notice that this integration has been successful and you can buy fully pre-tuned and pre-configured programmable EFI system for under $500.
I'm happy to show anyone how to do it *for free* or provide advice at no cost. Control fuel and timing, go turbo, change injectors - whatever you want to do.  No more factory EFI limitations or having to get an engineering degree to implement megasquirt.

I'm still doing fine tuning...

Nice work Doug! Only difference between the location of the 4 Runner, and Celica, is our ECU's are stuffed in above the glove box, and require removal of the glove box to get to. Otherwise it should all be compatible. ;)

You don't have to pull the glove box to get the ECU out. The top panel of the glove box comes out and gives you access...

C'mon guys. You know what I meant.  Geez. I would have said entire passenger side lower dash assembly if that's what I was getting at. :P

Who is Doug?
Sorry that I can't provide the units themselves at this time.  I'm one of those people who has to test things and make sure they're working before selling and my assembly source didn't meet my requirement bar.

I refer to a vendor - diyautotune - cost is $350, which is a little steeper than I'd like.

I can do these for any 22RE with VAST, including the 22RTE.   The 22RE versions are pre-tuned.  The 22RTE will be a bit harder to tune.

Just playing with this today, you've got total control over your timing curve as well as air fuel.   It's a really groovy system and not very difficult to use once installed and configured correctly.

So are you running squirt 'n spark or just fuel only?

The whole point of this project is to get it to "plug and play".
The stock ECU controls timing.  As such, I have to replicate that function.
It's Squirt and Spark Extra, using the stock ignitor and ignition system.
If I was just doing fuel, I would have had it done over a month ago... Fuel is cake!

This setup is for someone who doesn't want to get into the electronics side of it or who values their time.

The ignition setup gave me a lot of trouble.. We're talking signal level debug.  This is the ECU timing signal:

Guess I should've figured out the MSnS by the wiring pic  :P

Anyways, the wiring to me was the easiest part.  Like you said, figuring the spark stuff is the nightmare.  We went round 'n round with the Toyota coil and ignitor.  What we ended up with is going MSD 6A and an aftermarket coil (the stock coils kept burning up for one reason or the other).

PNP will make things look real nice though.  Hopefully you won't have the luck I did with the stock ignition components.

It's setup and tuned.. I had a big advantage with some baseline fuel and timing maps.. Very easy to get right once it was running.
Again, I don't sell the MS units - I'll refer you to Jerry at diyautotune.com.  I can help you with pre-programming and the adapter harness.

I have no use for a stock MS'd 22RE.  My whole point of doing this was to provide a tunable option for those of you wanting to do significant modifications.  I've got a turbo motor ready to go, but my wiring harness is going to deviate from stock... I have a signficantly different setup for that.

Because I don't know the Celica that well, I need to verify your ECU pin out per the FSM.  I need the page that looks like this:

The pinout is the same between all TCCS 22RE's (to my knowledge..) I know the 22RTE can be swapped directly for the 22RE ECU in the 85 Celica.

I'm very "quality" conscious.
The 22RE and 22RTE are not pinned out the same (check my above link).  A direct swap will work (injectors will fire and will run) - but you'll lose minor stuff like a heated 02 sensor..
